The Daughters of Despair
by Andrew Rivas
When Princess Ruby of Spinal is kidnapped, rumors about her abduction spread like wildfire around the kingdom. As an investigation mounts, eyewitness accounts from a variety of sources and points of view, including Princess Ruby's, soon reveal there are far more questions than answers.
Is it the work of the cultist group the A Capella? Does it have something to do with the upcoming hundredth anniversary of the Storm of the Screaming Skies? Could the mythical Daughters of Despair—the female bastards of kings who do the dirty work of the kingdom—be real, and if so, what would they want with the princess? Or was it an act of war—a coup launched by one of the non-reigning Families of the kingdom to regain the Crown?
Before long, a plan is hatched for Prince Stoic of Anima to rescue Princess Ruby in exchange for her hand in marriage. But in a world where science fiction and fantasy meet fairy tale, traditional gambits don't always win the game, and sometimes a princess can only rely on herself.
For fans of The Dark Tower Series and Game of Thrones.
"This book is a genre breaker, from its plot (a blending of fantasy and science fiction) to its unusual structure (written in first hand accounts like an oral history of the events) to its twist of the kidnapped princess trope (she's not waiting around for the fairy-tale to play out). At first, I found the non-traditional structure a little jarring, but quickly warmed up to it as I got more familiar with the style and the central character became clear. Part way through the first chapter, it hit its stride. From there out, it was a page-turner. I found it full of refreshing characters, funny dialogue, inventive situations and unexpected twists. It's the first in a series, so there's a lot left unresolved at the end, but the main thread comes to a satisfying stopping point. I'm giving it five stars for the excellent writing, solid world building, interesting plot and its fun, fresh take on a classic fantasy concept."
"I had incredible fun reading this story. My only criticism would be that the end left several questions unanswered, whereas I tend to like things wrapped up in a bow, but considering that it is the first book of a series, perhaps that is to be expected. Highly recommend, especially for fans of adventure/sci fi. I would compare it to books like The Dark Tower series and The Shannara series. If you enjoyed those books, or genres, then I would for sure say check it out. I did and I'm happy I did."
"I wanted to start with how much I loved the writing style in Daughters of Despair! The characters always felt real and personable, and much of the narrative was witty, keeping me engaged the entire time. I also found the interview style narration to be especially unique. It communicates the story in a way that almost feels like first person, but with shifting perspectives. As the story progresses, the style also becomes reminiscent of a script format, but again with first person narrated segments. It was incredibly engaging and the plot itself also keeps you interested from start to finish. This book was a definite 10/10 for me!"
