Thank you for being part of my community. I am participating in Stuff Your eReader today, true (click here for over 2,200 free or reduced cost books), but as a thank you, I like to reshare what I call “A Very Merna Christmas.” I wrote this gem a few years back, and it is one of the editions to the first of several books belonging to “A Merna Annals Side Quest” line, called The Winged Ones. Bear: A Very 1950 and More Christmas (aka “A Very Merna Christmas)
“Hey, Doc? Are you in?”
“Good evening, Bear. I’m in the kitchen.”
The ageless, wingless fae-merna shucked off his coat and closed a backdoor. In his millennia of existence, he never thought he’d live to see a former Queen of Immortals cooking a meal for human traditions. Dusting snowy fluff from his forever green hair, he laughed to see her dressed in domestication’s attire. Nephtyri Sinclair, doctor of linguistics, anthropology, and archeology, was anything but a 1960s housewife.
“How are you, old friend?”
“Ready for this blasted winter to be over. How is the university treating you these days?” Her hug was the sunset he remembered.
He followed her to the stove, stepping into handle potatoes on her behalf while she tended steaming shrimp. “They renewed my funding for another five years. How about you?”
“We’re leaving Baltimore in the summer. Ian hates to be away from a port, but linguistics doesn’t attract the dollars in the same ways science can.” Despite living in the United States for centuries, her desert accent remained. “I’ve applied for a few places locally, so don’t even start down that road.”
“I’m sorry my being male helped me more as well.”
She laughed. “Trust me. This era is an improvement for females, including those of us who live in hiding. Are your brothers not joining us this year?”
“It’s Martigan’s rotation to visit with Aryeh. Tuce should be here soon.”
“Any change in Aryeh?”
“You know the answer.” They both sighed and shook their heads, so Bear changed the subject, “Where are your children?”
“Katrina drove her bike up to Canada a few weeks ago, and she’ll be back in the spring with Bjorn and Rochelle. I think Viki missed her best friend too much. Elias should be back soon. He ran to Frey’s place over picking up something for me.”
“I wondered if you weren’t sleeping again. How’s the prohibition on herb treating you?”
She snorted. “Thank goodness cold medication works in a pinch against insomnia.”
“Irony being what it is, how else would a vampire handle that diagnosis?”
“Magic would be a nice start…”
